Free Disposal of Recyclables
Kaufman County promotes and encourages the disposal of recyclable products at the Kaufman County Convenience Stations, the newest of which is the Kemp ECO-Station in the southern sector of the County. Some of the items that will be accepted at the ECO-Station are:
- Aluminum
- Cardboard (No waxed cardboard accepted. Please break down boxes before placing them in container.)
- Batteries (car, lithium, and rechargeable)
- Eye Glasses
- Glass bottles
- Metal
- Motor Oil and oil filters
- Newspaper, shredded paper, office paper, magazines and junk mail
- Plastics #1 and #2 (look for national recycling symbol with number on bottom of bottles)
- Tires—limit 4 tires per person per day
- Tin—household food cans must be rinsed.
The Kemp ECO-Station is a tribute to ecological and environmental awareness. Convenience Stations are not landfills.
All landfills in Kaufman County were closed in the early 1990’s. Convenience Stations have large ramps where citizens can drive up and drop trash into huge open dumpsters. The Convenience Stations do not eliminate the need for landfills in Texas—they simply make dumping of solid waste more convenient for citizens to help prevent illegal dumping on the roadside.
Kaufman County Convenience Station facilities are operated as joint partnerships between cities and Kaufman County. The overall implementation of each of these Convenience Stations was made possible through grant funding awarded to Kaufman County through the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) to Environmental Co-op, Kaufman County’s non-profit environmental organization dedicated to managing Kaufman County’s Solid Waste Plan.
